THE 19th ANNUAL “HUNTINGTON WEST GIVES THANKS” PROJECT
If your family is new to Huntington West, you’ll surely want to join in the fun with our November project “Huntington West Gives Thanks.” We began this project after the terrorist attacks on 9-11-2001 as a way to show our appreciation to our local firefighters at Station 18 for their service to our community. The firefighters and paramedics at Station 18 have answered emergency calls in our neighborhood on many occasions and we are grateful for their support in our community. They have also judged our “Holiday House” contest for the past several years. As a small way to show our thanks, a family from Huntington West delivers a home-cooked meal to Station 18 each evening during the month of November.
Your meal does not have to be fancy or gourmet – the guys (and a couple of gals from time to time) at Station 18 are delighted to have anything you might want to offer. Most nights there are at least 8 to 10 firefighters and paramedics
on duty at the station, so your meal needs to be sufficient to feed that many adults - you can team up with a friend or neighbor to create the meal, if needed. We ask that you deliver your meal between 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. They also have a full service kitchen, so if you are pressed for time, you can deliver your meal earlier in the day and they can cook/warm up your meal per your directions at dinnertime. It is best to use disposable dishes, but if you do need to use a Pyrex pan, etc. just put your name on it and the firefighters will clean it up for you to pick up the next day or I will be happy to deliver your dishes back to you if any are still there at the end of the month. If you don’t have time to cook up a big feast, you can provide sub sandwiches, take-out, etc. However, our goal is to do our best to provide either home-cooked food or at least some kind of food they don’t have access to every day (like the fast food outlets and restaurants near our subdivision).
Your family will truly enjoy visiting our community’s new state-of-the art fire station facility….so hurry to sign up soon before all the dates are taken!
If you have children, the firefighters encourage you to bring your kids along and they will give them a “the works” tour of the new station house…fire truck included! I’m sure you and your children will find that our local firefighters are warm and welcoming – and they truly appreciate our efforts to honor their sacrifices and their service to our community.
Feel free to team up with other neighbor(s) to help out – lots of our families do share duties on their assigned night. If you would like to sign up for a night in November, please contact Susan via e-mail (preferred) or phone. Please suggest a first choice and then a second, in case your first choice is no longer available. Please include your contact information and I will confirm the date with you as soon as possible. Thanks so much for your participation and your support of our local heroes! A sign-up sheet will also be available at the Fall Fest, but be sure to sign up early to get the date that works best for you!

Huntington West is blessed with many generous homeowners willing to help a neighbor in need, even a neighbor they have never met. Our Board would like to thank a trio of neighbors who stepped up to help a single mom who needed repairs to her picket fence. Many thanks to retiree Dave Lawson for volunteering to replace over 50 broken pickets on the fence.
